TURTLE ISLAND IS HEAVEN ON EARTH !

During your stay at Turtle, home will be one of only 14 "bures," the two-room beachside cottage suites handbuilt along the edge of the Blue Lagoon. Each is a spacious suite with queen-size bed, rattan furnished sitting room, two tiled bathrooms, and fully stocked bar and refrigerator. The vaulted ceiling is constructed in the traditional Fijian manner with hand-shaped and lashed native noko noko poles. Room service is available but rarely used. Instead, the family of Turtle guests finds open air dining to be as much fun as it is delicious and varied. A seaside moonlight dinner, a mountaintop cocktail party, an intimate meal by lantern light on a private beach - the settings are as memorable as the fresh grilled lobster, Queensland mud crabs, local fish, succulent fruits, and fine French, Californian and Australian wines and champagnes. The conversation is light and lively. Concerns about worldly problems seem to disappear amid the happy exchanges of our guests. Dress is very casual. Shoes, jewelry and watches are of little value on Turtle Island.

Turtle is ringed by coral and the justly famous Blue Lagoon. Whether you want to stroll the white sand beaches, wade in the turquoise water or snorkel with a Fijian guide, the lagoon offers spectacular displays and diversions. Lose your worldly inhibitions during a romantic picnic on your choice of 14 utterly private beaches. The staff will bring you a boat, drop off your lunch of seafood delicacies, freshly roasted chicken, or whatever you prefer, and retrieve you whenever you want. Drink champagne. Read a book. Relive your first kiss.

After a few days, most guests realize the real pleasures here go beyond what the eye can see. A genuine, childlike exuberance and
innocence are contagious on this island of gentle days and romantic nights. Too often in our adult lives, we move away from a genuine regard for the basics of life. Love, friendship, sincerity. Uninhibited play, innocence. Turtle Island nurtures our fondest childhood memories. Time wasnÍt important in the safe neighborhoods of summer. When you didnÍt have to compete for everything. When you could romp freely with friends, have a warm sense of belonging. There's great comfort in all these things, comfort that you rediscover of Turtle Island.

This is what romance means to host Richard Evanson and the caring Fijian staff. Turtle really is for the young at heart. ItÍs for couples who want a renewal of the spirit, a brief return to those natural childlike ways. Turtle is perfect for honeymooners beginning their lives together or for those seeking to celebrate and rekindle a long romance.

It has been said that a traveler will not find a more tolerant, hospitable and friendly people on the planet than in the Fiji Islands.
Unchanged and unaffected by modern technology, Fijians are taught from an early age that family and friends are the most important things in life. From this warm ancient culture comes a nurturing, teaching, fun loving staff with a great South Pacific sense of humor. You'll find them as eager to share their traditions and history a to teach you to windsurf, take you fishing or, if you prefer, leave you to savor your solitude.

Though rich in native culture, Turtle and the nearby islands are basically undeveloped. No luxury high-rises, tennis courts or landing strips. No shopping malls or television. Just unspoiled natural beauty and the ancient rhythm of the tides. As a guest, you soon feel at home in the leisurely flow of friendly, sun-filled Fijian days. Neighboring islanders host activities such as Sunday morning church services, a mission school visit, and markets for shell-buying. At the end of a day, many guests enjoy sitting under the huge banyan tree, sharing kava (the Fijian ceremonial drink) and song with other guests and the Fijian staff.

The landscape and activities available on the 500-acre island are extraordinary and varied. Smooth white sands and calm waters on the lagoon side contrast with the rugged black volcanic cliffs and rolling surf on the windward side. Dense tropical forests open to grassy highlands with breathtaking vistas. Lush green mangroves with thick, twining roots border on coconut groves gently swept by tradewinds that keep the island pleasant and balmy all year-round. You can hike along jungle trails, climb a challenging hill, explore on horseback, or enjoy the more placid pastimes of sunbathing and swimming.

Columbia Pictures, in looking for a location for "The Blue Lagoon," surveyed a thousand possible sites before deciding to film the movie entirely on Turtle Island. Columbia felt Turtle closely resembled the mythical island described in the 190 novel on which the movie is based: "winding white beaches, dense jungle foliage; a crescent shaped cove below black lava cliffs; coconut groves through which Chinese pheasants run wild; rainbow-colored fish in incredibly clear blue water." Starring Brooke Shields, the movie was completed in 1980. The original 1949 version staring Jean Simmons was also filmed on Turtle Island. Small wonder that The Hideaway Report has named Turtle the "island of the year.,"

PRIVATE SUITES

The fourteen cottages or bures are spacious, two-room, beachside suites, right on the famous Blue Lagoon. Each offers all the comforts and serenity of a private, holiday home. Your separate sitting room features comfortable rattan chairs and couches with a bar and refrigerator stocked with your favorite beverages and an ice maker. All bures have either queen size or king size four poster beds,
generous bathrooms, with basins, hairdryers, tea and coffee making facilities, toiletries, irons and ironing boards. Sunlight and sea breezes stream through the many louvered windows. Even on a hot and humid night, you can enjoy a sound and restful sleep. Special attention has been paid to the overall design of our bures, combining modern building techniques with traditional Fijian
craftsmanship. Much of the timber used in the bures was grown on Turtle Island. The roof is covered with one foot of thatching,
intricately woven both inside and out. Guests tell us that our vaulted ceilings are the most beautiful they have ever seen, and that they fall asleep gazing upward. A generous expanse separates your bure from the next. You can sip a cocktail, watch the sun set over the Blue Lagoon, and feel that you have your own slice of paradise.

ACTIVITIES ON LAND AND SEA

Start you day whenever you wish. Rise with the sun for a couple of hours of deep sea fishing or sleep till noon. Troll for the yellowfin tuna, dorado, sailfish and marlin that inhabit the waters of the lagoon. Along the reef, fish for grouper, barracuda, trevally and coral trout. Return in time for breakfast, which is served between 9-11am daily. At the breakfast table, savor anything from a lobster omelet, eggs Benedict, to banana pancakes accompanied by freshly squeezed tropical juices.

Activities are limited only by your imagination. Fourteen private beaches are available for the complete and exclusive use of our guests. You may reserve a beach for the day simply by asking one of our staff. With a few hours notice, weÍll prepare a sumptuous picnic basket complete with wine, champagne or other favorite beverages. Take it with you or arrange to have it delivered at lunch time. Sunbathe, gather shells, or simple enjoy the fresh, tropical air.

On Turtle Island, many excellent trails offer varying degrees of hiking difficulty. Each boasts spectacular South Pacific scenery, providing striking views, including the unique three acre vegetable garden. Enjoy the native rain forests, the verdant hills and the fascination of the mangroves on your perambulation. Feel free to explore. Our staff is always delighted to guide you, or you can venture out on your own. Regardless of your level of expertise, youÍll find one of our horses just right for a ride along the trails and beaches. A good selection of both Western and English saddles ensures a safe and comfortable ride. As you would expect on an island, every imaginable water activity is available. Numerous boats are on hand to help you explore the lagoon and shore line. Gaff-rigged Sunfish sailing yachts, windsurfers and paddle canoes give you freedom of movement. Try one of our sea kayaks or go mountain biking. Our snorkeling is some of the best in the world; or you can explore the underwater wonders scuba diving. Swim to one of the large rubber rafts which serve as floating islands in the lagoon. Glide towards a shimmering horizon during a magnificent sunset cruise. Once a week, an excursion boat sets out for one of the neighboring islands to visit the villages and shell markets. Many guests enjoy visiting the Catholic mission or Methodist church on Sundays to worship with the Fijians.

SUMPTUOUS DINING

Every night is a dinner party. Sumptuous cuisine and an unlimited supply of imported liquors and champagne are served beachside under the stars. The meals are exquisite and our remote dining sites are always unique & equaled only by the warmth and charm of our staff. The menu may include freshly-caught crab or lobster, prime Australian beef, vegetables from our garden and tropical island fruits. Our wine list has a reputation as the finest in the South Pacific. After dinner, enjoy the talented entertaining Fijian staff as they perform their favorite songs and dances. Linger for house among new-found friends and stimulating conversation.

DRESS

Cool, casual, comfortable and colorful! For men, lightweight trousers or shorts with a T-shirt are appropriate. For women, shorts and a T-shirt or a light cotton dress. Bring comfortable shoes for wading, hiking and jogging. Sandals and thongs are the only other footwear necessary. Sunscreen (#15) and a hat will offer protection from the sunÍs rays for guests unaccustomed to being so near the equator. A lightweight wrap may be welcome for the evenings. Bikinis and brief attire are fine on the beach or around Turtle, but Fijian people are modest by nature, so brief attire may cause offense in public places. We ask our guests to be sensitive to the Fijian culture when visiting a village on another island.
